The Influence We Never Realize We Have

Every one of us is leaving footprints.

Every conversation, every smile, every criticism, every encouraging word, every decision, every act of kindness—or indifference—creates a ripple that reaches farther than we will ever know.

We often underestimate our influence.

We think our lives are too ordinary.

Our words too small.

Our actions too insignificant.

But that’s rarely true.

We are deeply interconnected. Like a line of dominoes, one small movement has the power to affect countless others. Sometimes the impact is immediate. Sometimes it unfolds over months or even years.

A teacher speaks one sentence of encouragement to a struggling child, and that child begins to believe they have a future.

A friend takes time to listen instead of rushing away, and someone chooses hope instead of despair.

A parent consistently models forgiveness, and a son learns how to love his own family.

One act.

One word.

One decision.

One domino.

The opposite is also true.

A careless comment can become an internal belief someone carries for decades.

A broken promise can damage trust that takes years to rebuild.

A harsh email.

An angry response.

Being overlooked.

Feeling rejected.

Being excluded.

We don’t simply experience those moments—we often carry them.

We Are More Influenced Than We Like to Admit

Many of us tell ourselves, “I’m not affected by what people think.”

But if we’re honest, we are.

The encouragement of others can give us courage.

The criticism of others can make us question ourselves.

Someone’s betrayal can make us hesitant to trust again.

Someone’s generosity can inspire us to become more generous ourselves.

Our direction is often influenced by the people around us.

That doesn’t mean they determine our destiny.

But they do leave fingerprints on our journey.

Recognizing that isn’t weakness.

It’s honesty.

And honesty is where healing begins.

The Choice to Be Authentic

Part of becoming REAL is acknowledging both sides of influence.

Sometimes we have been deeply blessed by the people God has placed in our lives.

Sometimes we’ve also been deeply wounded.

Ignoring either one doesn’t make it disappear.

Authenticity invites us to ask honest questions:

“How have others shaped me?”

“Where have I allowed someone else’s words to define me?”

“Whose encouragement helped me become who I am today?”

“How have my own words affected the people around me?”

These aren’t easy questions.

But they are freeing ones.

Because once we’re aware of our influence, we can begin stewarding it well.

God Is Never Surprised by the Dominoes

Perhaps one of the greatest comforts in life is knowing that while we may be surprised by the actions of others, God never is.

He isn’t caught off guard by betrayal.

He isn’t confused by closed doors.

He isn’t scrambling to rewrite His plans because someone disappointed us.

His purposes are never dependent upon perfect people.

Throughout Scripture we see this again and again.

People made poor choices.

Relationships broke.

Dreams seemed delayed.

Unexpected obstacles appeared.

Yet God continued weaving redemption through every twist and turn.

He has always been the Master Redeemer.

The dominoes may fall in directions we never expected.

But His hand is still guiding the story.

What others intended for harm, He is fully capable of transforming into something beautiful.

Compassion Changes the Way We Live

When we become aware of the influence we carry, compassion naturally grows.

We begin speaking more thoughtfully.

Listening more carefully.

Forgiving more freely.

Encouraging more intentionally.

We realize we may be standing in front of someone who has already had a difficult day.

Or a difficult year.

Or a difficult life.

Our words may become one more burden.

Or they may become the beginning of healing.

That’s a sacred responsibility.

Not one born out of pressure.

But out of love.

Choosing to Be REAL

No matter what influence others have had on us, we always have a choice.

When the domino effect has been painful…

We remain Rooted in the God who never changes.

We become Empowered by His Spirit instead of controlled by our circumstances.

We choose to be Authentic, acknowledging both our wounds and our healing without pretending either one doesn’t exist.

And we rest in knowing we are deeply Loved, regardless of how others have treated us.

When the domino effect has been beautiful…

We celebrate it.

We thank those who encouraged us.

We recognize the people whose faith strengthened ours.

We become intentional about passing that encouragement forward.

Because positive influence is meant to multiply.

Every act of kindness we receive becomes an opportunity to offer kindness to someone else.

Every word of hope becomes another domino we can gently set into motion.

Your Influence Matters

You may never know whose life changed because you noticed them.

Because you prayed.

Because you forgave.

Because you believed in someone who couldn’t yet believe in themselves.

You may never fully see the ripple effects this side of heaven.

But God does.

He sees every domino.

Every conversation.

Every hidden act of obedience.

Every quiet decision to love when it would have been easier to walk away.

So today, be intentional.

Be compassionate.

Be aware.

You are influencing someone, whether you realize it or not.

And as you continue becoming REAL—Rooted, Empowered, Authentic, and Loved—you become the kind of person whose influence points others toward hope, healing, and ultimately, toward the heart of God.
