The Legacy You Leave: Footprints, Handprints, and Heartprints
When most people think about legacy, they think about what they will leave behind.
A house.
A business.
A savings account.
A collection of accomplishments.
But I’ve come to believe that the greatest legacy isn’t something we leave behind.
It’s something we leave within people.
Long after our words are forgotten and our accomplishments fade, people will remember the way we walked, the way we served, and the way we loved.
I think of it as leaving footprints, handprints, and heartprints.
Your Footprints: The Example You Leave
Every day, someone is watching.
Your children.
Your friends.
Your coworkers.
The woman quietly sitting beside you at church.
The stranger who notices how you treat the cashier.
Your life is constantly preaching a message.
Footprints are the example you leave for others to follow.
They aren’t about perfection. They’re about direction.
When you choose integrity over convenience…
When you admit you’re wrong…
When you persevere through suffering without losing hope…
When you extend forgiveness instead of bitterness…
You’re leaving footprints.
The Apostle Paul understood this when he wrote:
“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
— 1 Corinthians 11:1
Our footprints become safest when they’re following the footprints of Jesus.
Someone may one day walk a little more courageously because they watched you keep walking through your own difficult season.
Your Handprints: The Difference You Make
Hands were never meant to stay closed.
They were created to hold, to help, to lift, to comfort, to build, and to give.
A handprint is left whenever your life touches someone else’s.
Sometimes it’s through generosity.
Sometimes it’s through listening without trying to fix.
Sometimes it’s inviting someone into your circle who feels forgotten.
Sometimes it’s writing the note, making the meal, praying the prayer, offering the ride, or simply showing up.
Handprints are evidence that love became action.
Jesus modeled this continually.
He touched the untouchable.
He welcomed the overlooked.
He gathered the lonely.
He served instead of being served.
He reminds us:
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
— Acts 20:35
We don’t always remember every gift someone gave us.
But we rarely forget the people who reached out their hand when we needed one.
Your Heartprints: How People Remember You
This may be the deepest legacy of all.
A heartprint isn’t something people see.
It’s something they carry.
Years from now, people may not remember every conversation you had together.
But they’ll remember how they felt when they were with you.
Did they feel seen?
Did they feel safe?
Did they feel valued?
Did they feel like they mattered?
The greatest compliment someone could receive isn’t, “She was successful.”
It’s, “She made me believe I mattered.”
Jesus left heartprints everywhere He went.
People who were rejected suddenly belonged.
People who were ashamed found grace.
People who believed they were forgotten discovered they were deeply loved.
Love leaves marks that time cannot erase.
As Paul reminds us:
“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
— 1 Corinthians 13:13
What Kind of Legacy Are You Leaving?
Every single day we’re leaving something behind.
Our footsteps.
Our fingerprints.
Our heartprints.
None of us will do this perfectly.
But every conversation gives us another opportunity.
Every act of kindness plants another seed.
Every encouraging word reminds someone they are not alone.
Every time we choose compassion over criticism, generosity over selfishness, or grace over judgment, we leave another imprint that may outlive us.
At REAL Women, we often talk about being Rooted, Empowered, Authentic, and Loved.
When we’re rooted in Christ, empowered by His Spirit, authentic in who He’s created us to be, and secure in His love, we naturally begin leaving footprints worth following, handprints that lift others, and heartprints that point people back to Him.
Perhaps that’s the legacy we’re really called to leave.
Not a name that is remembered…
But a life that helped others remember who they are in Christ.
So today, ask yourself:
What footprints am I leaving for others to follow?
Whose life needs my handprint today?
When people walk away from spending time with me, what kind of heartprint do they carry?
May our lives become a beautiful reflection of Jesus—one footprint, one handprint, and one heartprint at a time.
