staying REAL When You Feel Invisible
There is something about feeling invisible that can take you right back.
Back to being a little girl who didn’t feel seen.
Maybe you were overlooked. Maybe the adults around you were dealing with their own stuff and simply didn’t notice what was happening inside of you. Maybe you learned early that being quiet was safer. Maybe you felt like your needs were too much, your voice didn’t matter, or everyone else somehow came first.
And you can do a lot of work in that area.
You can heal. Grow. Learn to use your voice. Understand where those feelings came from. You can become confident in who you are and know that you have value.
And then something happens.
Someone forgets you.
You’re left out of something.
Your contribution isn’t acknowledged.
A conversation moves right past you.
Someone you care about doesn’t notice that you’re struggling.
Most of the time, it probably wasn’t intentional. People get busy. They forget. They overlook things. They have their own lives happening around them.
But that little feeling can still show up.
Invisible.
And suddenly, it isn’t just about what happened today.
It touches something much older.
I’ve noticed this in my own life, and I think I notice it more as I age.
There can be this subtle question that starts nudging at my heart:
Am I still needed?
Am I still relevant?
Does anyone see me?
Do I still have something to offer?
And if I’m not careful, a simple moment of being overlooked can start telling a much bigger story.
Invisible.
Unseen.
Not needed.
No longer relevant.
But those are not truths.
They are lies the enemy of our souls would love for us to believe.
This is exactly when I need to come back to REAL.
ROOTED
I come back to the One who sees me.
Not the person who forgot me.
Not the room that overlooked me.
Not the situation that made me feel insignificant.
God.
I am rooted in the truth that I am fully known and fully seen by Him.
I have never walked into a room where God didn’t notice me.
I have never had a tear He didn’t see.
I have never spoken a prayer He didn’t hear.
I have never aged out of His purpose for my life.
I am never invisible to God.
And neither are you.
EMPOWERED
Being empowered means I don’t have to disappear just because I feel invisible.
I can speak up.
I can say, “Hey, I think I got missed.”
I can ask for what I need.
I can join the conversation instead of waiting for someone to invite me into it.
I can keep using my gifts even when no one applauds.
Sometimes empowerment is bold and courageous.
And sometimes it’s simply refusing to shrink.
AUTHENTIC
I also don’t have to pretend it didn’t hurt.
That’s important.
Being REAL doesn’t mean talking ourselves out of our feelings.
“Well, they didn’t mean it.”
Maybe they didn’t.
And it can still hurt.
Both can be true.
Authenticity allows me to say, “That made me feel invisible, and I know this feeling is connected to something deeper.”
Then I can look at it instead of letting it quietly control me.
I can acknowledge the feeling without allowing the feeling to become my identity.
There is a big difference between:
I feel invisible.
and
I am invisible.
One is a feeling.
The other is a lie.
LOVED
This is where I have to stand strong in what I know.
I am loved.
Not because someone remembered to include me.
Not because someone noticed what I did.
Not because I am needed by everyone around me.
Not because I’m young enough, productive enough, interesting enough, successful enough, or visible enough.
I am loved because I am His.
Period.
And maybe this becomes increasingly important as we grow older.
Our roles change.
Our families change.
Our bodies change.
The world around us changes.
There may be places where we once felt very needed that don’t need us in quite the same way anymore.
But different does not mean irrelevant.
A changing role does not mean a disappearing purpose.
Getting older does not make us invisible.
There is wisdom in us.
There are stories in us.
There is love to give.
There are people to encourage.
There are prayers to pray.
There is still purpose.
There is still life to live.
There is still more.
So when that old feeling nudges at my heart and whispers, Invisible, I want to recognize it for what it is.
A feeling.
An old wound trying to tell an old story.
A lie that does not get to decide who I am today.
Instead, I return to what is REAL.
I am Rooted in the One who always sees me.
I am Empowered to use my voice and take up the space God has given me.
I am Authentic enough to admit when being overlooked hurts.
And I am Loved—completely, deeply, and without question.
You may feel invisible today.
But you are not invisible.
You are seen.
You are known.
You are loved.
And friend, you are still very much needed.
Stay REAL.
